BEARS GOLF TEAM IN REGIONALS
April 8, 2009
The
West Oso Boys Golf Team won their first 31AAA District
Championship. The team A members and Carlos Garcia will advance to regionals at Lozano Golf course on April 20 and 21. Team A members: Abraham Rivas, Jamie Rivas, Anthony
Martinez, Andrew Wilburn. Team B members: Carlos
Garcia, Raymond Casas, Daniel Gutierrez, Rudy de los Santos,
Thomas Progadiladad, Good luck to the Fighting Bears golf team

UIL ACADEMIC MEET RESULTS
April 8, 2009
On March 31, the Bears participated in the Literary Criticism
Contest as part of the UIL Academic Meet at Ingleside. The Literary
Criticism Contest is a 90-minute contest which requires
knowledge of literary history, critical terms, and ability in
literary criticism. Andrea Velasquez placed 1st in the District
Literary Criticism Contest from among a field of 24 contestants. Sharae Robinson placed 3rd, and Chandace Tryon placed 4th. The
Literary Criticism Team comprised of Andrea Velasquez, Sharae
Robinson, Chandace Tryon, and Anastasia Fillmore also placed
1st. All contestants will advance to Regional competition to be
held at TAMU-CC in April. Congratulations to all the
participants and to their sponsor, Ms. Rita Lockhart. |

Congratulations to the following basketball girls for their
post season honors
Chandace Tryon has been selected to
participate in two of the state top All-Star games. She will
compete in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All Star
game on May 8th in San Antonio and in the Texas Girls Coaches
Association’s All Star game on July 16th in Austin.
Chandace was also selected to the TABC’s All Region & All State
team and the TGCA’s All State team.
Anastasia Fillmore was selected to the TABC’s All Region team.
Sharae Robinson along with Anastasia Fillmore and Chandace Tryon
were selected to the TGCA’s Academic All-State Team.

BEARS TO THE Region V, Division II Powerlifting Championship
Two West Oso Bears lifters made it to the Region V, Division II
Powerlifting Championship. Cecilio Zarate qualified in the 242
lb. weight class, and John Baldwin qualified in the 181 lb.
weight class.
Both lifters are juniors and want to bring home a medal!
The Powerlifting Championships will be held on Saturday, March
14, at J.K. Northway Coliseum in Kingsville. Lifting will begin
at 9:00 a.m

BASKETBALL RESULTS
On February 26, Bears played Bandera. Score: Bears 66,
Bandera 51
Next game will be on March 4, 2009 at West Oso High School, time
7:00 p.m. Bears will be playing Sinton.

Congratulations to the West Oso
powerlifters on great season!
Competing at Kingsville this past weekend:
Cecilio Zarate - 3rd place in the 242 lb. weight class with a
total of 1,295 lbs. and a squat of 520 lbs. Cecilio is
ranked 7th in the region in his weight class, and he will
compete at the Region V, Division II Powerlifting Championships
for a chance to go to the State Championships.
John Baldwin - 3rd place in the 181 lb. weight class with a
total of 1,185 lbs. and a squat of 475 lbs. Baldwin is
ranked 11th in his weight class.
All lifters recorded new personal bests at the meet.

West Oso girls top Devine, 56-41, in 3A
area playoffs

With 14 seconds left in a game long since in the bag, Roy
Williams called a timeout to talk to his team. His West
Oso girls basketball squad already had put away its 56-41 win
over Devine in the Region IV-3A area playoffs Thursday at
McMullen County High School...

POWERLIFTING MEET AT CALALLEN
On February 21, 2009.
West Oso Powerlifting team attended to the
Coastal Bend Classic at Calallen.
Varsity Girl's 105 lb. weight class:
Mercedes Chale 3rd Place with a total of 515 lbs.
Varsity Boys:
John Baldwin finished in 5th Place in the 181 lb. weight class
with a total of 1,145 lbs.
Cecilio Zarate finished in 6th Place in the 242 lb. weight class
with a total of 1,250 lbs.
The JV Boys stole the show with their 2nd Place Team Finish:
Alex Gonzalez was 1st with a 1,000 lb total in the 242 lb.
weight class
Andrew Cavazos was 2nd in the 132 lb. weight class with a total
of 7
George Leon was 3rd in the 132 lb. weight class with a total of
7
Carlos Hernandez was 5th in the 181 lb. weight class with a

On January 10, 2009, middle school students across
the area met at Ingleside for the UIL (University
Interscholastic League) competition. West Oso Junior High school
has now released the names of the declared winners in each

YOUTH ART CONTEST
On February 1, 2009, Javier Lopez, WOJH student,
received 3rd place for his dry media art work at the
Art Museum of South Texas. The Visionarios 2008 Youth Art
Contest had nearly 600 students. The exhibit is on display
at the Art Museum until March 1, 2009. |

SHOW

November 13, 2008, Bears participated in a quiz show where high schools in the
Costal Bend compete in a single elimination tournament. The program emphasizes
quick recall of facts of the major disciplines and questions about movies,
