Board Notes …. For December 15, 2003
A quorum was established and
the meeting was called to Order followed by Roll Call of Board Members and
notice of meeting.
Dr. Helms and Mr. Casas
addressed the Board of Trustees and audience with comments with reference to the
death of Juanita Garcia, a student at WOJHS. Dr. Helms provided brief comments
and asked all present to stand for a moment of silence. Mr. Casas spoke to the
need of the family of Juanita Garcia.
Dr. Helms and Mrs. Dornak
introduced and recognized Kathy Acosta, a Kindergarten student and John Lucas
Flores, a Grade 1 student from JFK, for their academic accomplishments. John
Lucas read a story to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Garza recognized Mrs. Aguedita
Davila, Mrs. Lydia Castillo, and Mrs. Janie Santos for their work in migrant
student recruiting. West Oso ISD was recognized at the state level for
outstanding effort in the recruitment of migrant students.
The Board of Trustees approved
the Consent Agenda including: Minutes of November 17, November 20, Monthly
Investment Report, General Fund Financial Report, Approved Early Release Dates
for 03-04 thru 05-06, repaving of parking lots specified, Workers Compensation
Services Agreement, and MOU with TAMU Kingsville.
Board Members heard reports on
Special Programs, a Curriculum Report from teachers in Grades 4&5, and a report
on establishing a facilities corporation and District Foundation.
In other business the Board
acted to approve Campus Improvement Plans, approved establishing a Facilities
Committee, provided approval for Board Member(s) to attend an Education
Foundation Conference in February, provided approval for Board Member(s) to
attend the National School Boards Association Conference in March, approved
Board Operating Procedures for WOISD, approved Board Workshop and Meeting dates
for January 12 and January 20, 2004. The Board entered into closed session for
personnel matters. Board Members returned from closed session and approved the
employment of Mr. Mark Belford for WOHS Sp. Ed., Ms. Cecilia Cabasos as
Diagnostician, and Mr. Jesse Soto for WOES.
