SUPERINTENDENT’S COLUMN Say “THANKS!” To Our School Board Members January is school board recognition month in Texas. Being an effective school board member is no easy task. School board members need to be knowledgeable about complex educational and social issues, and carry out initiatives and directives from both federal and state governments. To face these demands of governing our public schools, they give countless hours of personal time. Through dedicated work, school board members serve the public interest in education and serve the needs of our children. They ensure that decisions about public schools are made as close to the needs of our community as possible. With the advice and counsel of the educational professionals, our school board has an impact on every aspect of our schools. It is a huge responsibility and not to be taken lightly. The staff and students of WOISD are asking all local citizens to take a moment to tell a school board member “thanks for caring about our children.” We proudly recognize: Alma García Ramírez, Lucas Jasso, Velma Rodríguez, Cella Boyd, Diana Cantu-Guerrero, Guadalupe Casas, and Shirley Jordan for their dedication to the children of our community. Our school board is one of 1,040 such boards across the state of Texas. These boards enable us to have local control of public schools, meaning that decisions on school programming are made by local, elected representatives who understand the community’s unique values, culture, and circumstances.

TIPS FOR PARENTS How Do I Know a Good Early Reading Program? 1. Every teacher is excited about reading and promotes the value and fun of reading to students. 2. All students are carefully evaluated, beginning in Kindergarten, to see what they know and what they need to become good readers. 3. Reading instruction and practice lasts 90 minutes or more a day in first, second, and third grades and 60 minutes a day in Kindergarten. 4. Before or after school help is given to all students beyond first grade who need extra instruction or who need to review skills. 5. Reading instruction and practice includes work in letters, sounds, and blending sounds. Students learn to blend letters and sounds to form new words. 6. Learning new words and their meaning is an important part of instruction. 7. Students have daily spelling practice and weekly spelling tests. 8. All students are read to each day from different kinds of books. 9. All students have a chance to read both silently and aloud in school each day and at home every night. 10. The connection between reading and writing is taught on a daily basis. 11. Every classroom has a library of books that children want to read. This includes easy books and books that are more difficult.
