WOISD SCHOOL TAXES GOING DOWN!!!
On Monday, August 29, 2005 WOISD Trustees approved a tax rate of $1.78 being $0.12 cents lower than last year's tax rate. Read more about it in the September Newsletter .

  NEW REPORT CARDS FOR THE DISTRICT.
  Report cards are different for each school, and they will have important information about your child's performance.  If you have any question about it, please feel free to contact the schools.  Report Cards for the 1st Six Weeks will go out on September 30, 2005.
 

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
West Oso ISD will observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15.  Several Latin America countries had  their independence during the month of September.  See school calendars for events and activities related to this month. (JFK, WOES, JH )
 

MR. BEN FRANCO- WOHS NEW PRINCIPAL.
Mr. Ben Franco was board approved as the new principal for WOISD.  Mr. Franco is an experienced administrator. We welcome to Mr. Franco to our community.

         RED RIBBON WEEK 
WOISD will join to other Americans celebrating the Red Ribbon Week on October 24 - 28. During this week communities and students across America are committing themselves to living drug-free lives. We encourage our community to wear a Red Ribbon to affirm our commitment to drug prevention.

WOISD HOSTING HEALTH TALKS
West Oso ISD will be hosting health talks at West Oso Elementary  during the months of October and November.

Daylight Savings Time  Sunday, October 30, at 2:00 a.m. Set your clocks backward one hour before going to bed on Saturday night.

TEA HOTLINE FOR HURRICANE - RELATED INFORMATION
The Texas Education Agency has opened a hotline to answer education questions arising from hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
The phone number is 1-800-957-5109. 
TEA has a hurricane related information web page to assist  school administratorsteachers, and parents.

FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
The 2005 - 2006 Football Schedule is now available.  This season starts on August 13 and it will end the first days of November.  ( Click here for schedule)

OUT OF SCHOOL OR OUT-OF-DISTRICT REGISTRATION TAAS/TAKS EXIT LEVEL
Individuals who are no longer enrolled in a Texas Public School and who have not previously passed all sections of the TAKS, TAAS or TAMS may retake the section(s) not mastered (Click for more information)

WOISD EARNS THIRD SUPERIOR FIRST RATING
West Oso ISD officials announced that the district has received a rating of "Superior Achievement" for the third consecutive year under Texas' School FIRST  (Financial Accountability Rating System of Texas) System.  This system shows the performance in the management of school district's financial resources. 

TASB/TASA ANNUAL CONVENTION
West Oso ISD to present at TASB/TASA Convention at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas, the presentation entitled, "PK - 16 School District and University Collaboration, Making the Difference for Students" is scheduled for Saturday, October 29, 2005, from 9:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

 WOISD HEALTH FAIR
During the months of October and November, WOISD hosted health talks presented by several recognized organization.  A health fair closed these series of events.  Free screenings, immunizations, and flu shots were offered during the fair event.  Everybody enjoyed it!

CORPUS CHRISTI LITERACY COUNCIL ORGANIZATION
The Corpus Christi Council Organization is a non profit organization which coordinates programs and resources to reduce functional illiteracy in Corpus Christi.  Basic literacy, ESL and Work Place Literacy are some of the programs offered by this organization.   WOISD HOSTING UIL ACTIVITIES
West Oso ISD is sponsoring UIL (University Interscholastic League) activities on Saturday, December 3, 2005 at West Oso Elementary School.  The UIL events enhance the students' educational experiences by students competing in several areas.  This is an opportunity for students to test themselves against their own accomplishments and those of their peers. CENTRAL OFFICE HOURS
 
WOISD Central Office will be closed for the holidays from December 21, 2005  thru January 3, 2006.

HOLIDAY  VACATION
Holiday  Vacation begins on Tuesday, December 20 with Early Release.  JFK and WOE students will have early release at 12:30, and WOJH and WOHS will have it at 1:00 p.m.  Students will be on Winter vacation from Wednesday, Dec 21, 2006 until Friday, January 6, 2006.  First Day of classes is Monday January 9, 2006. Teachers will return on January 4 for District Wide In-service.

HOLIDAY DECORATING  DOWNTOWN EVENT
 
On Saturday, November 19, a volunteer group from West Oso ISD participated in the Holiday Decorating Downtown Event. They decorated five downtown streets with nice decorations.

 BEAR CENTER
 
Bear Center will be closed during the Winter Holidays.  The Boys and Girls Club will be open for WOE, WOJH, and WOHS students who are currently enrolled in Bear Center.  Bear Center will resume on January 17, 2006

 PRACTICING GOOD HYGIENE IS A GOOD STRATEGY TO AVOID INFECTIONS.
Outbreaks of skin infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been reported in sports teams including wrestling, volleyball, and most frequently, football teams. SCHOOL FINANCE RULING ISSUED BY TEXAS SUPREME COURT
The long-awaited ruling by the Texas Supreme Court on the school finance case was announced on November 22. The Court ruled that the current $1.50 cap for maintenance and operations on ad valorem school taxes was a statewide property tax and therefore unconstitutional.  The Court found that “the public education system has reached the point where continued improvement will not be possible absent significant change," and that, “public school financing does not yet violate the 'general diffusion of knowledge' mandate in the constitution."

The "No Child Left Behind Federal Act" (NCLB) asks School Districts to survey parents/guardians on their opinion of public schools.  You will receive a survey in the mail.  The survey should be completed and mailed to:

2005 AEIS GOLD PERFORMANCE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS RECEIVED (GPA)
The GPA recognizes school districts and campuses for the increasing percentage of students achieving the Commended Performance Level on the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills)  WOISD receives 2005 AEIS Gold Performance Acknowledgments.  WOHS earned a total of 2 Gold  Performance Acknowledgments as compared to zero the prior year. Gold Performance Acknowledgments were received in the following areas: Recommended High School Program/DAP and Comparable Improvement: Reading/ELA.

IT'S A GIRL THING! CONFERENCE
The Third Annual "It's a Girl Thing! Conference" sponsored by It's A Girl Thing Organization will be held at
West Oso High School Auditorium on February 10 and 11. The cost of the conference is $ 25.00. Follow the link for schedule and more information.

EARLY DISMISSAL FOR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10
WOISD will have early dismissal for students on Friday, February 10 to allow for staff development in the afternoon.  Students in JFK and WOE will be released at 12:30 p.m.  Students in WOJH and WOHS will released at 1:00 p.m.

 BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION WEEK
Career and Technical Education (CTE)  Week will be observed from February 13 - 17 in  WOISD.  This national week of observance recognizes the role that CTE plays in preparing youth and adults for successful careers.

2005-2006 JUNIOR HIGH TRACK SCHEDULE
It is track and field season again !!!  Bears will start practices on Monday, February 6 at West Oso High School Stadium from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.  The first four meets will be held at CCISD, Cabaniss Field starting March 1.

 UIL alignment announced
UIL has announced the 2006-2007, 2007-2008 alignment for high schools.  West Oso High School will be joining District 31-AAA Region 2.
2005-2006 GOLF SCHEDULE
Golf season starts on February 7, with Bears playing against Orange Grove in Alice Golf Courses.  The season is over on April 10 with the District Golf Tournament.

ollege for kids registration is now in progress.  Only students who have been promoted to the next grade level at the end of the 2005-2006 school year are eligible to participate in this summer program.  All applications need to be turned in by April, 21, 2006 to the school counselor. CC PARK AND RECREATION SUMMER PROGRAMS
Information about latchkey camps, sports camps, summer programs and another community services is now available in the 2006 Summer Guide of Corpus Christi Park and Recreation Department. These programs are good resources to keep your kids busy during this summer.  (Guide)
TUTORIALS FOR STUDENTS
West Oso ISD schools are offering after school tutorials for students.  It is important for your child to attend these tutorials to improve his/her academic performance.  Please contact your child's school for tutorials' schedules.
  LADY BEARS SOFTBALL TEAM in PLAYOFFS
The West Oso Lady Bears Softball Team did it again on Thursday night by defeating La Feria 20-9 at Kingsville High School.  The Bears advance to play District 30-3A champion Sinton in the Class 3A area playoffs on May 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The Bears will start this season on February 18 with Metro Relays Meet at the Cabaniss Field.  The State Track and Field Meeting will be on May 12 and 13 in Kingsville.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION CALENDAR
The election calendar for the West Oso Independent School District 2006 Trustee Election is set for Saturday, May 13, 2006. Two trustees positions will be up for election.  Early voting will be held from May 1 - May 9, 2006.  Election returns will be tabulated on May 13. (More ... )

West Oso High School will host its First Annual Academic Banquet honoring academic honor students and the induction ceremony for the National Honor Society. The banquet is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 7:00 p.m in West Oso High School Cafeteria.
UIL DISTRICT ACADEMIC MEET
West Oso High School recently competed in the UIL District 31AAA Academic Championship. Students who placed in the top three at district level or were members of winning teams will advance to the UIL regional meet to be held on April 21st and 22nd at Texas A & M University, Kingsville.( More ... )
